Extract by Valeria Martin from the lesson of Mons. Javier Echevarria, Prelate of Opus Dei, titled "Every social situation must be the occasion of testimony" Friday, August 29, 2014 (clicca to download pdf file - italian speech)
«The Church reaches out to the suburbs, to go to the men». This was underlined by Mons. Javier Echevarria Rodriguez, prelate of Opus Dei, speaking on the theme "On the Road to Emmaus for all roads in the world." Mons. Echevvaria recalled the encounter with Father Giussani:«it was a discovery, Father Giussani had a great ability to get close to people».
The Prelate explained that Opus Dei, founded by Escriva de Balaguer, began its journey from the poor and the sick, but also by intellectuals, because we are all invited to be the Church and therefore to love it with all our might.. «The Church» - he said - «did not left the man alone, but consttantly has encountered it».
He reiterated the need to «get out of ourselves» for the good of the community and stresses the major responsibility of the Christian: the interest and prayer for all people.
You must live each occasion as the possibility of testimony: each of us is Christ himself, and in the relationship with each person the Lord makes us bearers of His Peace.
The Opus Dei is at the service of people of every social situation for the love of God;«Like the disciples of Emmaus - continued Echevarria - walked sad and melancholy, without hope; Then the unexpected: a stranger (who we know to be Jesus) became interested in them and asked "what do you speak?". For the Lord is so: it interesting to us, to our lives. The fate has not left men alone, as the title of this Meeting remember to us ».
He then continued quoting St. Paul:«God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong» and he recounts episodes of humble people, usually rescued and assisted, which also helped with prayer. If you live love, life is full. As stated Mr. Fontolan (director of the International Center of Communion and Liberation, who moderated the meeting) «The greatness of Opus Dei is the following of an Other, an eye toward an Other».
He then asked: «How do you keep from third prelate of the ecclesiastical institution, such a responsibility?». He answers «I just tried to pray asking Our Lord to be faithful to what I saw». The trust in God is so crucial and calls for him to pray for him.
Fontolan also asked how the work, which in principle was seen as “punishment from God’’ due to original sin, can be something useful and good for life.
According to Opus Dei's work is instead a "continuation of Creation", which helps to sanctify ourserves every day. "It is in the midst of the most material things of the earth that we must sanctify ourselves, serving God and all men" this is, in fact, the teaching of the founder of Opus Dei, Josemaria Escrivá. It is the idea of the sanctity of the ordinary life, that is accomplished by the work. We can not be true Christians, in fact, if we leave things halfway. It is necessary, therefore, to finish well our work. Finally, the inevitable question: how can we help our most in need brothers? Feeling ourselves, simply, partakers of what is their living to the hilt..
