Working means taking the time to do something, drawing a general economic advantage.
Another italian desuete synonymous is 'travaglio', in French 'travail' and in Spanish 'trabajo', in english 'labor' from the same latin word, which means hard work. So, generally, as the word itself means, the work was almost never seen as a joyful duty, but as a kind of inevitable and painful fate, like a curse, and only needed to procure a livelihood for himself and his family.
Therefore, if it's possible to do so without damage, one thing to dodge or download on others reputed less intelligent. In the varied human universe we find also the opposite side, a lack of human virtue of temperance applied to the work itself. It is the disease that I call 'professionalìtis', ie to consider our work as the only center of our world - for various reasons, money, pride, need for personal affirmation in the eyes of themselves and others, greed - and then devote oneself excessively at the expense of everything else, the family and social relations, for example.
I thought about it deeply, and I thought that both ways to see the work are reductive, isn't it? Therefore I believe that, together with relativism in vogue today, these ways of thinking and acting are the cause of many evils in the world. When it occurs, for example, a car accident, or maybe even at work, one goes immediately in search of those to accuse, of responsibilities, preferably of the collective farm, or maybe of the government too - it rains, government thief! - or of the society in general.
A part of the reason for this view is, because in any case in each are always persons involved, that the collective structures are also precisely composed of people.
But what it does not seem to be taken into account, is the fact that one could invent repressive apparatus, make laws galores, and adopt policies, rules and organizations, but if there is no sense of "DUTY" and "BALANCE" in doing things, however it should be all in vain.
Accidents can happen to fatality, certainly, and therefore not depending on anyone will, but only by a combination of negative concurrent circumstances.
But also there are also causes resulting from deficiencies in the organizational structures or due to human deficiencies or errors. In most cases, therefore, or at least for the dozens and dozens of cases of which I have had personal experience, there is always something that someone should have done and did not do, alto while being aware of the need to do, and although it explicitly provided. Failure to comply with a limit of a signal; of operational practice or instruction of work; neglecting to enforce or comply with a rule or provision.
Instead, if everyone had love for a well done job, it could come very good.
On the one hand, therefore, there is lack of civic virtues essential to every living, numerable among those said 'cardinal', which results in some situations. The other side it's the lack of a stimulus or a reference, that is an absolute benchmark, that could helps all of us not to "fall on the other side of the horse," .
God created us to work (GEN II, 15): The Eternal God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
So the work is not a curse or a consequence of the original sin - as even some believers would be led to think - but it is made for man, and man is made to work, how fish to swim and birds to fly. It should be done with love, therefore, whatever, to the best of our own ability.
Certainly there is work and work, but also in the most menial jobs or less profitable or more strenuous, or more difficult or dangerous, it can exercise the human virtues, and above all - if you're lucky enough to have FAITH - you can sublimate the WELL DONE job dedicating it to our Creator. Beginning with us it will benefit everyone.
However, we should be very careful do not overdo, not to fall into the opposite defect to do the job the idol and goal of our life, in other word of not getting sick of 'professionalitis'. This, beyond to make us losing sight of our ultimate goal, would make us ignore many other duties towards God, our family, and to our neighbor.
In such disgraceful case the work instead being a virtue will become 'vice'. Such as drinking or taking drugs, until one no longer will be free, and will unable to see into his own soul the true goal of his work, and condemning to suffering not only himself but also the others who are in relationship with him.
Let's then recall our christian roots and act consequently.
From our point of view, then we must try to sanctify ourselves trying to reach that state toward which a person, physically and spiritually alive every single day and on all occasions, strives to follow the Jesus Christ teachings. Our pursuit of holiness is expressed then in behavior, style, and in the uniqueness of life - what is the uniqueness of life?
In our life we pursue the search for holiness through the certainty to be God's children and adopt a consequent behavior everywhere - WORK - FAMILY - SOCIAL RELATIONS, ENTERTAIMENTS. Words of the founder of Opus Dei: 'The normal everyday life can be holy and full of God and the Lord calls us to sanctify our daily task, because in this consists the perfection of the Christian'.
To support the work of sanctifying the daily realities in my opinion at first comes the FAITH, IN PARTICULAR THE CERTAINTY OF BEING CHILDREN OF GOD. This can not be cultivated without prayer. At any time of the day you have to remember this fact.
Work is the means by which we provide us and our family the means to live, but not only that. In the Opus Dei spirit, the work can be sanctified and become a way of sanctification: having been taken by Christ, the work becomes a redeemed and redemptive; not only is the environment in which man lives, but a means and path of holiness, something to be sanctified and sanctifying.
Any honest work is therefore an opportunity to give glory to God and serve others.
The work's sanctification then becomes the pivot around which the spiritual life of the Christian. Sanctify work means to run it with the greatest possible human perfection (professional competence) and with Christian perfection (for love of God and service of men). As you can offer to God something done without care and pull away, just because you have to do it?
"We are people of the street, ordinary Christians immersed in the bloodstream of society, and the Lord wants us to be saints and apostles, right in our professional work; that is, who wants to sanctify us in our jobs, who sanctify the occupation itself and that, through it, helping others to become holy.
